History of Women’s Service Club from March 1, 1948 to March 1, 1949

Pauline Davis, Club Historian

On March 27, 1948, the Harvey’s Lake Women’s Service Club was one year old, at which time the membership totaled 67. And then: On their first anniversary. What a hub – a bub-bub! New members were to be taken into the club. Twenty – two members was the number, Oh, wasn’t that fine? This made a grand total Of eighty-nine. Meetings were held regularly at the Rex Dining Room. There were dinners, teas, and picnics Yes, even flowers in bloom At the fall flower display There were some lectures, too. With a grand Christmas party for me and for you. A Valentine Party was very nice too. Cause you brought your husband along with you. Our Club has been active you’ll certainly aggree. When you review its activities at this time with me. First was the rummage sale held in Luzerne. Where a penny received was a penny earned. If you like to play cards, why don’t you attend the card party in July at the home of a friend. The bake sale in August. Tis an annual affair. Cakes, pies, bread and cookies Just everything there A talent show in October Twas held at the school An evenings entertainment Gainst that there’s no rule. The ham raffle brought a nice amount into our Service fund, too! And why all these activities? Why do we want to earn more money and more money! Listen and you will learn The money is spent to help those in need, to lighten their worries. Tis a pleasure indeed milk for the children, food, clothing and shoes are just a few of the causes for which the money is used. In sickness, in health, our club does its part, the Christmas baskets and boxes brought joy to many hearts. Yes, its all earned for service, Where ever it is needed In our whole community no call goes unheeded. Cupid played well his part This past year Bertha Kern was the bride Now, she’s no longer here. Our best wishers are with her where ever she may go A very good worker. A pleasure to know. Death is no respecter of persons we’re told. It visits the young as well as the old. Our club is young. Indeed it’s quite new. But death took its toll. The number was two. Mrs Burton King June 18, 1948, Mrs. Arley Shannon – Dec 1, 1948. So we gain and we lose. Some in joy, some in sadness. But, we know that’s our pathway. Life can’t be all gladness. But let us remember our prayer for the day: To be large in thought, word and deed, so we pray may we always be kind and gentle in all that we do and know that there’s work here for me and for you. It’s by helping each other. In serving the needs of all of our brothers. Our club grows indeed. My God’s richest blessings on our club abound. And may we in thankfulness spread cheer all around and by helping and serving in all times of need, we will be a service club in name and in deed.
